Elasmobranch Assessment in iSimangaliso Wetland Park (2020–2023)

    This vital research project, led by Sharklife NGO, aims to deepen our understanding of elasmobranch species—sharks and rays—within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. By gathering baseline ecological data, the study seeks to inform conservation strategies and management plans for these remarkable marine animals.

    Project Objectives

    The study addresses several key objectives:

    • Assessing species diversity and relative abundance.
    • Mapping distribution patterns and understanding habitat associations.
    • Clarifying taxonomy for rays, a group with significant conservation concerns.

    These efforts align with the South African National Plan of Action for Sharks, addressing critical gaps in knowledge and supporting informed decision-making.

    Why It Matters

    Southern Africa is home to one of the richest elasmobranch faunas globally, but it faces significant conservation challenges. With 32.7% of species threatened with extinction—double the global average—this research provides critical data to protect these vulnerable species, especially understudied rays.

    Methodology

    Using non-invasive techniques, the project ensures minimal impact while collecting robust data:

    • Stereo-BRUVs (Baited Remote Underwater Video Surveys): Capture species diversity and size metrics.
    • Underwater Visual Census (UVC): Record species in their natural habitat.

    Study Areas

    Research takes place in key zones of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, including the Sodwana Diving Restricted Zone and the Offshore Wilderness Zone, where elasmobranchs are known to congregate.

    Duration

    Running from 2020 to 2023, this long-term project involves frequent field trips to gather comprehensive data.
