Dive The Data - Sodwana Bay

This collaborative project falls under the SHARKLIFE MAIN OBJECTIVE: Through scientific research, education and awareness bring about positive change to the current destructive trends of ocean exploitation. By tracking and recording sightings over time, we gain insights into the biodiversity of an area and can start to understand shifts and changes in population sizes, seasonality, and perhaps the connections to growing pressures.

Much of the marine ecosystems and the species therein still remain a mystery to be slowly unraveled as we expand our knowledge on different interactions, behaviors, and populations of the creatures that inhabit different regions.

Today, we are faced with the reality of complex pressures: overfishing, habitat destruction, tourism, pollution, and climate change. By tracking and recording sightings over time, we gain insights into the biodiversity of an area and can start to understand shifts and changes in population sizes, seasonality, and perhaps the connections to growing pressures.

While scientific assessments can be long awaited; collaborative citizen science can be achieved anywhere there is a willing dive community – big or small. Dive staff are in the water every day, and come to know an area and its animals intimately. This local knowledge is invaluable and we have found a way to record and share it with anyone from backpackers to scientists to explore.
