This project falls under SHARKLIFE Aim 3: Increase marine tourism and transform shark populations into a sustainable living resource by developing educational ocean experiences for all South African’s.
Project Overview:
Sharklife developed the idea of cage diving at Aliwal Shoal on the south coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal in 2008 in line with one of the organisations main aims;
To increase marine tourism and transform shark populations into a sustainable living resource by developing educational ocean experiences for all South African’s.
Below is a Top Billing insert which aired in 2009 to promote the concept.
Scuba diving with sharks had been conducted at Aliwal Shoal for a number of years prior, but because of the training constraints associated with scuba a relatively small number of the public participated.
With a vision to make the experience more accessible to non-divers, Sharklife promoted the idea to local dive operators. It was Debbie Smith from Africa Dive and John Miller from Cage Diving KZN who saw the value in the experience and invested a great deal into the idea.
Many years on nearly all diving companies in Aliwal Shoal offer cage dives, a now thriving ecotourism activity reliant on healthy shark populations continues to promote and support shark conservation.
Sharklife would like to thank all its members and partners who have enabled the organization to realize this aim.
