Overview
The Marine Biology Training Internship is a practical, ocean-based program designed to build strong, transferable field skills. You spend consistent time in the water learning to read ocean conditions, identify key species, and apply core ecological survey techniques used across modern marine science. Training is delivered inside a functioning field-station environment, giving you daily exposure to real equipment, real coastal operations, and the rhythms of applied marine work.

Program Level
The Marine Biology Training Internship (MBTI) is an entry-level field training internship designed to build real ocean competence and strengthen fieldwork fundamentals — diving, species recognition, understanding reef habitats, and applying basic survey approaches.
By the end of the program, students have a clear grasp of how field sessions operate, how to interpret what they see underwater, and how to apply good habits in real marine conditions.
The MBTI is ideal for students exploring marine science for the first time, divers wanting more ecological context, and anyone seeking a grounded, practical introduction to field skills in a protected area.

Themes & Methods
The Marine Biology Training Internship is structured around four core themes. Each theme links time in the water with simple survey tasks, clear routines, and short debriefs. During a 4-week stay you will rotate through all four themes; students who stay longer revisit them with more responsibility and independence.
1. Coral Health & Benthic Cover
- Method: Guided reef dives and snorkels using CoralWatch colour scores, simple habitat descriptors, and photo notes to describe what you see on the reef.
- Focus: Practise noticing coral condition, substrate types, and basic benthic communities. Learn how divers record “what the reef looks like” in a structured, repeatable way.
- Good for students who want a solid grounding in coral-reef habitats before tackling more complex survey work.

2. Shark & Megafauna Observations
- Method: In-water and vessel-based encounter logging for sharks, rays, turtles and other megafauna, using standardised datasheets and basic behaviour notes.
- Focus: Build disciplined observation habits, improve species and behaviour recognition, and understand how simple encounter logs contribute to long-term awareness of local wildlife.
- Good for students drawn to shark and megafauna conservation who want structured, ethical exposure rather than trophy-style encounters.

3. Reef Fish & Community Patterns
- Method: Roving Diver Technique (RDT) and basic Diver-Operated Video (DOV) exercises to record fish groups, size classes and obvious behaviour along the reef.
- Focus: Practise organising what you see into clear categories: key families, size structure and schooling patterns. Learn how fish communities give quick clues about reef condition.
- Good for students interested in tropical reef ecology and wanting repeat practice in underwater species ID.

4. Field-Station Survey Systems Workshop
- Method: Workshops introducing the survey systems used at the Sharklife Field Station, including RUV and BRUV camera units, VR2 acoustic receivers, and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) setups.
- Focus: Understand what each tool measures, how deployments are planned, and how data from different systems fit together. You will handle example equipment, walk through deployment scenarios, and review demonstration footage or sample datasets.
- Good for students who want early exposure to professional monitoring technology and to see how a working field station is structured.

Field-Skills Portfolio
Throughout the internship you build a portfolio that documents your practical progression and the skills you’ve developed in the ocean. This provides clear, verifiable evidence of your applied field abilities for university credit requests, future supervisors, or later field placements.
Your portfolio includes:
- Verified species-ID logs
- CoralWatch sheets and RDT survey records
- Rocky-shore and reef-profile notes
- Annotated photo observations
- Short ecological reflections
- A summary of competencies achieved across the four-week progression
The portfolio is a strong, professional record of what you can actually do in the field — not just what you’ve attended.

Supervision & Assessment
Training is delivered by experienced field staff who work daily in the Sodwana Bay environment. You receive direct guidance during water sessions, feedback on species ID accuracy, and support as you build your ecological understanding.
Assessment is practical and ongoing:
- demonstration of core ocean skills
- accurate species identification
- correct use of survey tools (RDT, CoralWatch, rocky-shore methods)
- consistent field-note quality
- overall progression across the four-week structure
This approach ensures your competence grows steadily and is verified throughout your internship, not judged by a single test or classroom assignment.

Certificate of Achievement
At the end of the internship, you receive a Sharklife Certificate of Achievement confirming your successful completion of the four-week training program. The certificate reflects the skills you have demonstrated during your stay, including:
- ocean competence and field readiness
- species ID accuracy and ecological understanding
- correct use of core survey methods
- consistent participation in daily field activities
The certificate pairs with your Field-Skills Portfolio to provide a complete record of your practical development — a strong addition for university credit requests, future applications, or early-career marine science pathways.

Costs
Program fees reflect the real costs of operating in a marine field environment. The high number of scuba dives and field trips increases costs, but fees are heavily discounted for longer stays. As a non-profit organisation, Sharklife directs all surplus fees back into the Field Station, ensuring your contribution supports both your training and the wider conservation mission.

These fees include your private room, airport transfer, one full scuba course (OW or Advanced), up to 24 scuba surveys per month, all dive gear, and daily field-station support.

* Meals — The field station accommodation has a fully equipped kitchen where you can prepare your own meals. There are regular trips to the local supermarket where you can purchase all common food items. Alternatively, there is a restaurant across the road where you can order lunch and dinner from a large menu.
Travel Info
Program start dates
The MBTI runs on a rolling basis, with start dates on the 1st Monday of each month. The minimum duration is 4 weeks, providing a focused period to build core in-water confidence, learn standard monitoring methods, and complete foundational training activities. Longer stays are welcome.
Airport transfers
Richards Bay Airport (RCB) is about 200 km (±2 hrs) from our base. To streamline logistics, we provide one group transfer per month to align with program start and end dates:
- Arrivals: please book flights to arrive at Richards Bay Airport by 13:00 on the start day.
- Departures: please book flights to depart after 11:00 on the final day.
- If you cannot make these times, let us know in advance and we’ll do our best to accommodate alternative arrangements.
You will be met at Richards Bay Airport by a uniformed Sharklife staff member in a Sharklife-branded vehicle. A photo and contact details of your Sharklife representative will be shared in the Arrival WhatsApp group before your trip, so you can easily recognise them.
International travel
- Main gateway: all international students should fly into Johannesburg — O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB).
- Connecting flight: from Johannesburg, take a domestic flight to Richards Bay (RCB). Flight time is about 1 hour.
- Customs & transfers: allow at least 2–3 hours between your international arrival and domestic connection.
U.S. students
- Direct flights are available to Johannesburg (JNB) from New York, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C.
- After clearing immigration, connect to Richards Bay (RCB).
- Schedule your RCB flight to arrive by 13:00 on the program start day.
European students
- Most major European cities have direct flights to Johannesburg (JNB).
- From JNB, connect onward to Richards Bay (RCB).
- Some itineraries route via Doha, Dubai, or Addis Ababa before Johannesburg.

Bringing a laptop is optional but useful for note-taking and portfolio completion.
Do I need prior scuba certification?
No. You can complete Open Water or Advanced as needed when you arrive. Rescue and Divemaster courses are also available at additional cost.
What does a typical week look like?
Expect 3–4 sea/field days (weather dependent) and 1–2 centre days for analysis, planning, and skills sessions. Weekends are generally free for rest or local trips.
What are the arrival and departure windows?
Start dates are on the 1st Monday of every month. Arrive at Richards Bay Airport (RCB) by 13:00 on the start day and depart after 11:00 on the final day. Tell us early if you need alternatives or travel advice.
Deposit and cancellation?
- 50% non-refundable deposit due within one week of acceptance.
- Balance due three weeks before arrival.
- Cancellations within three weeks of arrival are non-refundable.
Medical & insurance requirements?
You must be fit to dive and carry travel/medical insurance (DAN or equivalent recommended). Bring any prescribed medication and scripts.
Is it safe to travel on my own?
Yes. All of our students travel to Sodwana Bay on their own. You’ll be met at Richards Bay Airport by a uniformed Sharklife staff member in a Sharklife-branded vehicle, and taken directly to the field station.
