Project Objectives
The study aims to:
- Build a Photo-ID database to estimate species abundance and analyze habitat associations.
- Record re-migration intervals and spatial distributions to understand residency and site fidelity.
- Collect biological data, including sex ratios, health status, and behavior.
- Map home ranges and habitat preferences using satellite-tagged turtles.
Why It Matters
While much research has been conducted on nesting sea turtles, significant gaps remain in understanding non-nesting species such as Chelonia mydas (green turtles), Eretmochelys imbricata (hawksbill turtles), and Lepidochelys olivacea (olive ridley turtles). These species play essential roles in marine ecosystems, yet their behaviors, population structures, and habitat use remain underexplored. Insights gained from this study will improve conservation strategies and address priorities highlighted during international sea turtle agreements.
Methodology
A combination of innovative and non-invasive techniques is being employed:
- Photo-ID and Underwater Visual Census (UVC): Track individual turtles and document spatial distributions.
- Paired Laser Photogrammetry: Measure individuals for demographic and health assessments.
- Satellite Tagging: Monitor movement patterns, foraging behavior, and habitat use.
Study Area
Research is focused on zones within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, including the Sodwana Diving Restricted Zone, Offshore Wilderness Zone, and Controlled-Pelagic Linefish Zone North.
Project Highlights
In 2022, seven high-quality satellite tags, donated by Project STORM, were deployed, complementing earlier tagging efforts. This advanced tracking enables a more comprehensive understanding of turtle movement and habitat utilization, filling critical gaps in marine turtle research.
