Understanding Inshore Habitat Use and Spatial Risk Factors for Endangered Elasmobranch Species in the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area (2025–2028)

    This collaborative research initiative, led by Nelson Mandela University and Sharklife NGO, focuses on endangered elasmobranch species within the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area. By addressing critical gaps in habitat use and spatial risk factors, the project supports conservation planning and sustainable management efforts.

    Project Objectives

    1. Deploy and maintain acoustic telemetry receivers and stereo-BRUVs to monitor species abundance and habitat use.
    2. Analyze fishing pressure using shore angling competition data.
    3. Develop a Spatial Conflict Risk Index (SCRI) to identify and mitigate high-risk zones.
    4. Provide actionable recommendations for integrating ecological and anthropogenic data into iSimangaliso MPA management.

    Why It Matters

    Endangered elasmobranchs play essential roles in marine ecosystems but are vulnerable to human activities due to slow growth, late maturity, and low reproductive rates. The findings will support global conservation goals, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.

    Study Area

    The research spans iSimangaliso’s inshore zones, including Controlled, Catch-and-Release, Restricted, and Wilderness Zones. These areas provide critical habitats for breeding and juvenile development while experiencing varying levels of human impact.

    Research Methods

    • Stereo-BRUVs (Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems): Assess species composition and size distribution.
    • Acoustic Telemetry: Track movement patterns and habitat preferences of tagged elasmobranchs.
    • Shore Angling Data Analysis: Quantify fishing effort and identify overlaps with critical habitats.
    • Spatial Conflict Risk Index (SCRI): Combine ecological and fishing data to map high-conflict zones.

    Anticipated Impact

    The SCRI will inform biodiversity management planning, ensuring sustainable use of iSimangaliso’s resources while protecting critical habitats for endangered elasmobranchs. The research also aligns with international biodiversity frameworks and provides insights into conservation practices globally.
