Sharklife Dive master
The Divemaster internship in South Africa focuses on operating in a working marine environment — not tourism. You learn to read conditions, manage people, make clear decisions, and stay composed when the ocean shifts.
Training sharpens your skills to demonstration level and builds the discipline expected in science-support diving: safe leadership, precise execution, and strong situational awareness.
For anyone aiming to work around marine science or field operations, Divemaster is the credential that shows you can handle responsibility and operate confidently in real ocean conditions.

DM Training dives
As a Divemaster internship in South Africa trainee, you’ll lead supervised scuba surveys for interns at the field station, building real leadership experience in a controlled, supportive environment. Working alongside your instructor, you develop the judgement, awareness, and calm in-water management expected of a Dive Professional — with the time and space to refine those skills properly.
These dives take place on Sodwana Bay’s shallow coral reefs, giving you consistent exposure to warm water, clear visibility, and rich marine life. It’s a far more focused learning environment than high-volume tourist operations, where training often has to be compressed. Here, you progress at a professional pace, gaining the confidence needed to lead dives responsibly and independently.
training DM Dives are to:
- Practise controlled navigation across known reef transects
- Develop the ability to read conditions, currents, and reef structure in real time
- Build species awareness by observing fish, turtles, rays, and reef sharks
- Refine buoyancy, trim, and situational awareness to a professional standard
- Strengthen your ability to monitor a small group calmly and confidently
- Improve underwater documentation skills (behaviour notes, habitat cues, general observations)

DM costs
Professional Divemaster training requires substantial in-water time, boat support, and close instructor supervision — all of which carry real operational costs. As a non-profit, Sharklife directs every fee straight back into the field station to keep equipment maintained, boats running, and training standards high. Your contribution directly supports the infrastructure that makes this level of hands-on development possible.
